Turn on the kitchen faucet and water appears almost instantly. It feels simple enough.
But the water filling your glass has already been on a remarkably complex journey.
It may have fallen as rain or snow, moved through soil and rock, spent years underground, traveled through a municipal treatment facility, passed through miles of distribution lines, and finally made its way through the plumbing inside your home.
Along the way, water interacts with the world around it. It dissolves minerals. It carries naturally occurring compounds. It may encounter human made contaminants. If it enters a municipal system, it is treated and disinfected before continuing its journey.
Water is not simply H₂O with a list of things that need to be removed. Its chemistry reflects where it came from, what it encountered, and how it was treated along the way.
Understanding that journey changes the way we think about water quality and filtration.
Every Glass of Water Starts Somewhere
For most homes, water begins with one of two general sources: surface water or groundwater.
Surface Water
Surface water includes rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and other bodies of water above ground.
These sources are constantly interacting with the surrounding environment. Rain and snowmelt can carry soil, organic material, agricultural runoff, road residue, and other substances into waterways.
Because surface water is exposed to the environment, its composition can also change with the seasons, weather, surrounding land use, and biological activity.
Groundwater
Groundwater follows a different path.
Rain and snow slowly move through soil and layers of rock before collecting underground in aquifers. Wells draw water from these underground sources.
As water travels through rock and soil, it can dissolve naturally occurring minerals along the way. Calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, silica, and other minerals may all become part of the water depending on local geology.
This is one reason two wells located in completely different parts of the country can produce water with dramatically different chemistry.
Even neighboring properties can sometimes experience different water conditions depending on well depth, geology, and local groundwater movement.
Water Naturally Picks Things Up Along the Way
Pure H₂O is rarely what occurs in nature.
Natural water contains dissolved minerals, gases, organic compounds, and other substances that reflect the environment it has passed through.
Some of those substances are completely normal. Some may even contribute to the mineral character and taste of the water.
Others can create practical issues around the home.
For example, elevated calcium and magnesium contribute to what we call hard water. Hard water is generally not a drinking water safety issue, but it can lead to scale buildup on fixtures, plumbing, water heaters, and appliances.

Human Activity Also Becomes Part of the Story
Water does not move through an untouched world.
Agriculture, manufacturing, roads, wastewater, household chemicals, firefighting materials, and countless other human activities can introduce substances into the environment.
Depending on the source and location, water quality concerns may include things like:
- PFAS
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Heavy metals
- Nitrates
- Volatile organic compounds
- Industrial chemicals
- Microorganisms
- Sediment and particulate matter
Not every contaminant is present in every water source, and not every detectable substance represents the same level of concern.
That is an important distinction.
Good water treatment begins with understanding what is actually present rather than assuming every home needs the same solution.

For City Water, the Journey Includes Treatment
If your home receives municipal water, the water usually goes through a treatment process before entering the distribution system.
The exact process varies by location and water source, but municipal treatment may include steps intended to remove sediment, control microorganisms, improve clarity, and disinfect the water before it reaches homes and businesses.
This treatment plays an important role in protecting public health.
At the same time, treatment itself can change the character of the water.
Disinfectants such as chlorine or chloramine may remain in the water as it travels through the distribution system. When disinfectants interact with naturally occurring organic material, treatment byproducts can also form.
This is part of why municipal water filtration at home is not necessarily about correcting a failure at the treatment plant.
Municipal treatment and home filtration serve different purposes.
A treatment plant must safely provide enormous quantities of water to an entire community. Home filtration allows an individual household to further refine that water according to its own preferences and priorities.
Then Water Travels Through Miles of Infrastructure
After municipal treatment, the journey is still not over.
Water may travel through miles of underground distribution pipes before reaching your property.
The age and material of those pipes vary widely from one community to another.
Along the way, water remains in contact with the infrastructure carrying it. Changes in water chemistry, pipe materials, corrosion, construction activity, and other conditions can influence what eventually arrives at the home.
This helps explain why the water leaving a treatment facility is not necessarily identical to the water coming from every household faucet miles away.
Your Home's Plumbing Is the Final Part of the Journey
Even after water reaches your property, there is one final system to travel through: your own plumbing.
Pipes, fittings, faucets, water heaters, and household fixtures all become part of the water's environment.
The age of the home, plumbing materials, water temperature, stagnation time, and the chemistry of the incoming water can all influence what eventually comes out of the tap.
This is also why testing water directly from the home can sometimes provide more useful information than relying exclusively on a community water report.
A municipal report tells you important information about the water system. Testing at the tap can tell you something about the water you are actually using.
So What Should We Remove?
This is where water filtration becomes much more interesting than simply asking which system removes the most.
There are filtration technologies capable of extremely aggressive treatment. In certain applications, that level of treatment is exactly what's needed.
But for many households, the better question is:
What is actually in this water, what should be reduced, and how can we accomplish that while preserving as much of the water's natural character as practical?

Another thing the journey of water teaches us is that not every gallon in your home needs to be treated exactly the same way.
Water used for showering, laundry, appliances, and household cleaning has different demands than the water your family drinks and cooks with.
A whole home filtration system can provide broad treatment before water is distributed throughout the house.
A more targeted undersink filtration system can then provide additional filtration for drinking and cooking water.
Rather than expecting one filtration stage to accomplish every possible goal, this layered approach allows different technologies to do what they do best.
There Is No Single "Normal" Water
One of the most fascinating things about water is how much it varies.
Two glasses can look identical while having very different mineral profiles, treatment histories, and water chemistry.
One may have traveled through limestone for decades before being pumped from a well.
Another may have started as snowmelt, entered a reservoir, gone through municipal treatment, traveled several miles through city pipes, and finally passed through the plumbing of a century old home.
They may both look perfectly clear.
But their stories are completely different.
Curiosity Is a Good Place to Start
The more we learn about water, the harder it becomes to think of it as something ordinary.
Where did it come from?
What geology did it pass through?
What naturally occurring minerals are present?
How was it treated?
What did it encounter on the way to the home?
What actually needs to be filtered?
Those questions lead to better decisions than simply searching for the system with the longest contaminant list.
